Montecristo is, without a doubt, the most famous and universally appreciated Habanos brand. The brand takes its name from the hero of Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, a story that was especially popular among the torcedores (cigar rollers) at the factory in Havana where the brand was established in 1935.

Initially, the Montecristo range was limited to five vitolas, simply numbered from 1 to 5. Over the years, and in order to better meet the desires of the most discerning aficionados, other sizes were launched—from the majestic Montecristo A to the delicate little Joyitas and the magnificent ‘Edmundo’.

The Montecristo ligada (blend), which is particularly well balanced, is made exclusively from leaves carefully selected and grown in the Vuelta Abajo region, home to the world’s finest tobacco. The brand was created in 1969 and, like Cohiba, remained an exclusive gift for diplomats and foreign dignitaries for many years. In 1998, the brand was commercialised. The Montecristo Short Humidor “Year of the Snake” is a strictly limited special edition released to commemorate the Chinese Year of the Snake 2025.

Only 13,480 pieces were produced worldwide, each individually numbered.Launched in 2004 and retired after eight years, this vitola left a lasting mark on cigar lovers. In 2024, Habanos S.A. revived it for the Trinidad brand’s 55th anniversary during the Habanos World Days in London. Presented in elegant boxes of three, the cigars feature three bands, including a commemorative anniversary band and the iconic “T” foot band. The medium-bodied Robusto Extra measures 6 1/8” by 50 ring gauge, with a signature pigtail cap. Hand-rolled with select Vuelta Abajo leaves, it preserves the classic, aromatic character of the original.
