Brand Story

The history of Martell dates back to the 18th century, when its founder, Jean Martell, left his native Jersey to try his luck in France. Specialising in the brandy trade, the entrepreneur settled in Cognac. Through contact with the region's winegrowers, he learned about the specific characteristics of the terroir and the secrets of the production process for the famous eau-de-vie. This solid experience acquired over the years has built the heritage of Martell, a family house renowned for its authentic cognacs of exceptional roundness. With its strong local roots, Martell quickly developed an international outlook. In 1783, it became the first cognac house to export its products to the United States. In all, nine generations have succeeded one another at the head of the company, all driven by the same quest: excellence and innovation.

Product Detail

For this exceptional cognac, Christophe Valtaud, the ninth-generation cellar master, blends up to 450 (!) very old eaux-de-vie at least 14 years old. But that's not all: the eaux-de-vie come from the region's most prestigious production areas: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois. With so much exclusivity, it's not surprising that a particularly elegant bottle design has been chosen for Chanteloup XXO. The cognac is named after Château de Chanteloup, which was acquired by Theodore Martell in 1838 and served as the family home for many decades. The estate, which now serves as an exclusive guest house, visitor centre and maturing cellar, is still regarded today as the spiritual home of the House of Martell.
