Caroni by Master of Malt 1997 Rum
Caroni by Master of Malt 1997 Rum
Description
Brand story
Master of Malt began operating in 1985 as a small mail-order company that specialized in selling whisky, and they would go on to open their first retail shop in the Kent town of Royal Tunbridge Wells in 1990. Like many savvy businesses of the 1990s, they saw the huge potential of the internet and launched their first website in 1997. This proved so successful that they closed the original shop the following year. Over the years, Master of Malt has built a reputation as a prolific independent bottler. With access to swathes of impressive stock, the company has always offered a wide range of different whiskies and in 2013 they bottled an unnamed 60 year old Speyside malt, at the time was one of the oldest single malts ever released.
Product Detail
What's interesting about this range is the wealth of information available on the labels, enabling the discerning drinker to find out where the liquid came from and the type of cask used, to name but a few. This particular Caroni was distilled in December 1997 and emptied from its cask in January 2020, which represents 22 years of ageing, although we're not sure about the years of tropical and continental ageing. It was finally bottled and sold in 2022, with a run of 284 bottles at 61.6%.

Tasting Notes
Nose : Grilled pineapple, doused with chimichurri dressing. Fresh leather and robust, estery oak. Vanilla rests in the depths, with a tropical touch of guava joining the ranks.
Palate : Super soft initially, before that leathery, dense oak packs a punch. Rich, earthen notes of brewed tea, treacle toffee, plus crumbly rum and raisin fudge.
Finish : Enjoyably spicy. Warm notes of baking spice, cloves, and cinnamon punctuate hearty helpings of stewed fruit, burnt sugar, drying oak, and oily tobacco.
